Automaker Recalls More Than 91,000 Vehicles Due to Defect

The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration or NHTSA recently announced that BMW of North America is recalling over 91,000 Mini Coopers because of an airbag sensor defect. A number of Mini Coopers manufactured between 2005 and 2008 are impacted by the recall. A faulty sensor may cause the front passenger airbag not to deploy in a car crash. According to the NHTSA, the sensor in the passenger side detection mat may not recognize a passenger is seated in the front passenger seat, causing the airbag to fail to deploy in a car crash.

The NHTSA reported that BMW will replace the defective detection mats free of charge for consumers. According to the automaker, approximately 10 percent of vehicles included in the recall have defective sensor mats. The automaker also reported it had received a report of an injury that may have been connected with the defect.
