With a history of encouraging fans to ignore safety measures at his live events, the tragic events that unfolded during Travis Scott’s Astroworld Festival performance were not unforeseen, Lyons & Simmons’ Chris Carr told Dallas’ WFAA news.
Eight fans were killed with many more injured when the crowd surged toward the stage during the rapper’s Nov. 5 concert. Event attendance was estimated at 50,000.
“How in the world could they let this happen again? The danger of this type of a concert at this venue and especially with this performer was well known,” said Carr. “The promoters, the operators, the venue owner, security, even PR and advertising know that this entertainer encourages fans to get rowdy.”
Since 2015, Scott has twice been arrested for urging fans to bypass security measures and rush the stage and several fans were injured during a stampede to get into his 2019 Astroworld event.
Event promoter Live Nation Entertainment also has been cited numerous times by the Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA) for a variety of safety issues at events across the country according to reports.
“Someone should have stopped this show for sure,” said Carr. “I can’t imagine the terror felt by people in that crowd who were completely out of control and didn’t know if they were going to live or die. I would want the ones who should have done things differently to be held accountable and I would want to know this is never going to happen again.”
